Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn at Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father's death as a Carnival barker at the age of an infant She was required to provide for the family by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She went to school there. She quit school in just two years in order to study acting. The route she took was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed for was not available. When she was employed as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. She worked as an usherette in the mornings and appeared at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first permanent acting gig. Drama studies led her to earn her degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
